Matthew Rankin

Matthew RANKIN (1980, Canada) is an experimental filmmaker. His work is marked by a lyrical aesthetic combining documentary and historical elements to portray the imperfection and artificiality of human existence. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a place that became a recurrent theme in some of his short films, such as Tabula Rasa (2012) and Municipal Relaxation Module (2022). His feature-length debut The Twentieth Century (2019) won three out of the eight nominations it received at the Canadian Screen Awards. His second feature film, Une Langue Universelle (2024), premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
