Ida Lupino
Ida LUPINO (1918–1995, UK) was a British-American actress, director, writer and producer, widely regarded as the most prominent woman filmmaker working within the Hollywood studio system of the 1950s. Through her independent production company The Filmakers Inc., which she co-founded with producer and writer Collier Young, Lupino helped pioneer socially conscious, low-budget filmmaking outside the major studios. Her directorial work addressed taboo subjects such as unwed pregnancy, rape, disability and marital inequality, often through melodrama or film noir. She became the first woman to direct a film noir with The Hitch-Hiker (1953). Her short but influential directing career stands as a foundational example of proto-feminist cinema. Her film The Trouble with Angels (1966) is selected for IFFR Focus: The Future Is NOW 2026.
