E.F. Burian

E. F. BURIAN (1904–1959, Czech Republic) was a Czech poet, musician, playwright and filmmaker. He was one of the key figures in the Czech avant-garde movement and was a multi-talented artist whose work encompassed theatre, music, journalism, and film. Burian was also an active member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In 1933, he founded the influential theatre D 34, renowned for its politically engaged and formally experimental programming. Burian was arrested in 1941 and spent the remainder of the war in Nazi concentration camps. Alongside his extensive theatre work, he directed several films during the 1930s. After the war, he founded D 46 and D 47 theatres.
