Neto Villalobos

Neto VILLALOBOS BRENES (Costa Rica) graduated in Sociology from the University of Costa Rica and later studied Film Directing at the Centre d’Estudis Cinematogràfics de Catalunya. He has taken part in programs such as the Berlinale Talent Campus, the Rotterdam Lab, and the “How to Tell a Story” workshop led by Gabriel García Márquez. His first feature, Por las Plumas (2013) premiered at the TIFF and later screened at SSIFF, BAFICI, IFFR, Miami and Toulouse. His second feature, Cascos Indomables (2018), was written during a residency at the Cinéfondation and also premiered in TIFF. He co-directed El Gran Líbano (2017), which opened Directors’ Fortnight as part of the Lebanon Factory. He is currently developing the experimental documentary Jamón, supported by the TFI Latin American Fund. His most recent short, Amor es el monstruo (2022) won the Audience Award at the Shnit Festival. This is also the title of his third feature, an international co-production now in post-production, supported by Ibermedia, DAFO, and Panama’s national fund, and The Darkroom 2026.
