Gyz La Rivière

Gyz LA RIVIÈRE (1976, Netherlands) is a visual artist. Film, installations, graphics, video art, neon works, publications and readymades are his favourite media – used in combination with his unique philosophy and humour. His projects are often extensive pieces of art driven by a research-like approach and his innate inclination towards collecting. The year 2022 marked 25 years since La Rivière’s debut exhibition at MaMA, Rotterdam. Gyz has presented more than 100 exhibitions, including solo shows at TENT, Cokkie Snoei, Joey Ramone and OMI. La Rivière has also exhibited in De Vleeshal, Roodkapje, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich, Kunsthal and in many more international exhibition spaces. He also published several books, including Home Video: Videotheken & Video in Groot-Rotterdam (2021), which is about video rental stores, and Het telefooncellenboek van Rotterdam (2022), which is about phone booths. He has realised four feature documentary films: 12 – a film about the Fret Click (2009), selected for IFFR 2010; New Neapolis (IFFR 2020); Rotterdam 2040 (2013); and Malin TV (2023), selected for IFFR 2023. Among his most notable recognitions are receiving the Rotterdam Maaskant Prize (2002), ‘The Praise of Folly’ Honorary Pin from the Comité Erasmus (2011) and the Dolf Henkes Prize (2012).
