Éric Rohmer
Eric ROHMER (1920-2010, France) was an actor, writer, and filmmaker. He earned his degree in History and taught before he began writing in the mid-1940s. In 1950, he made his first short film Journal d’un scélérat. He was the founder of La Gazette du Cinéma in 1950, along with François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Jacques Rivette. In 1957, he joined André Bazin’s Cahiers du Cinéma as editor-in-chief. He was a member of the French New Wave. In 1959, he made his first feature film Le Signe du lion/The Sign of Leo. Later he made a series of Six Moral Tales: The Bakery Girl of Monceau (1963), Suzanne’s Career (1963), The Collector (1967), My Night at Maud’s (1969), Claire’s Knee (1970), and Love in the Afternoon (1972). His films have been screened at numerous film festivals worldwide, were nominated for multiple awards including the Oscars (1969), and have won numerous prizes, such as Best Film at San Sebastián International Film Festival (1970) and the Special Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival (1976). He passed away in 2010 at the age of 89.
