Tamil superstar Sivakarthikeyan plays Chezhiyan whose involvement with a student movement puts him into a life and death struggle with a ruthless intelligence agent. In her latest period piece, Sudha Kongara delivers action, intrigue, romance and songs in a gripping drama.
1965. Tamil Nadu, India. Chezhiyan (Sivakarthikeyan) becomes entangled in an agitation that threatens the very livelihood of the people of the Madras State. His attempts to protect his passionate student brother (Atharvaa) put him into a life and death struggle with an intelligence agent (Ravi Mohan) whose fanaticism is only met by his ruthlessness.
Recalling Surya’s storyline in Mani Ratnam’s Aayitha Ezhuthu (2004), Sudha Kongara (Irudhu Sutru, 2016) yet again displays her knack for real-life historical subjects with the required seriousness while delivering the goods for a pakka piece of entertainment. It has the heroics, it has the romance, it has the songs – and the action! Kongara shows an excellent rapport with Tamil superstar Sivakarthikeyan, whose boyish charm is put to good use here. Lavishly shot by Ravi K. Chandran, the period piece setting allows for a certain classicism and a welcome relatability fitting SK’s star image. Parasakthi makes for a gripping drama about family, brotherhood and community.
