When 17-year-old Lot loses her eyesight in a freak accident, her world comes to an abrupt halt. Sent to a rehabilitation centre for visually impaired people, she experiences the triumphs and tribulations of life without her sight.
After an accident leaves 17-year-old Lot (Aiko Beemsterboer) blind, she must re-learn how to navigate the world. As an active teen and avid scuba diver, she’s deeply unhappy when her doctor recommends a rehabilitation centre to assist her recovery process. Soon enough, she finds solace and happiness in the centre’s supportive assorted crew, amongst them are Micha (Minne Koole), a young man, and Ed (Edward Stelder), an older father-like figure. But what Lot struggles with the most are her vivid dreams, in which she still maintains the ability to see.
In Ik zal zien, Mercedes Stalenhoef tosses away the rose-tinted glasses and offers us a beautiful cinematic take on the multifaceted experience of blindness without shying away from its jagged edges. The filmmaker’s unique approach to visually obscuring characters while maintaining their onscreen vibrancy, is complemented by the kaleidoscopic sound design. Led by Beemsterboer’s affecting performance, Ik zal zien is further punctuated by striking moments where we witness the world directly through Lot’s eyes.
