Anne Fontaine was born in Luxembourg in 1959. She began her career as a dancer and actor. In 1993, she debuted as a filmmaker with Les histoires d’amour finissent mal… en général (which won the Prix Jean Vigo). She has directed almost twenty films, moving effortlessly between genres, be it thriller, comedy, biopic, psychological study or historical drama, including titles Augustin (1995), Nettoyage à sec (1997), Comment j’ai tué mon père (IFFR 2001), Nathalie… (2003), Coco avant Chanel (2009), Les innocentes (2016) and Marvin ou la belle éducation (2017). Her latest film, Boléro(2023), revolves around Maurice Ravel’s creation of his most famous musical masterpiece.
Coinciding with the world premiere of Boléro at IFFR, Anne Fontaine will offer an intimate talk, extensively discussing music and the central role it plays in her film. She will delve into her intentions and inspirations. She will give us an overview of her entire career and of her desire, both as screenwriter and director, to explore different paths, templates and genres to tell her stories.
