Como el cielo después de llover

Mercedes Gaviria is the daughter of Víctor Gaviria, one of Colombian cinema’s rare true masters (whose works have often been shown at IFFR). When Víctor started production on his most recent film La mujer del animal (2016), he invited Mercedes to be his assistant, to accompany him through the process. She accepted the invitation, on condition that she could film proceedings, on and off set.

Como el cielo después de llover is certainly worth watching as an unorthodox making-of, but that is maybe its least relevant aspect. Much more important is the way Gaviria reveals her tense relationship with her father and his very masculine idea of humanism – which makes it in the context of Cinema Regained also the antithesis to Hopper/Welles with its macho banter between maverick dad Orson and his adopted-for-the-evening brat Dennis. Affinities that are not elective are certainly more complex – as well as a source of turmoil and learning found nowhere else.
