Sibyl (beautifully played by Virginie Efira) is a psychotherapist with a troubled past. She decides to get rid of most of her patients so she can write a novel. But she is intrigued by new patient Margot (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and starts secretly recording their conversations as inspiration. Margot is an up-and-coming actress who is having an affair with actor Igor, whose wife Mika (Sandra Hüller) is the director of the film they are both working on. The fact that Margot is pregnant by Igor makes things extra complicated.
The parallels and differences between the three women are gradually exposed by cutting back and forth between Sibyl’s present and past, her sessions with Margot and the shooting of the film. In this dramedy, director Triet, who also worked with Efira on Victoria (2016), tackles interesting issues: manipulation, imposter syndrome and the relationship between fiction and reality. Could director Mika and psychotherapist Sibyl actually have more in common then they realise?
