A Bulgarian spy film that Metodi Andonov (1932-1974) made just prior to his internationally acclaimed The Goat Horn (1972) and The Great Boredom (1973). It shows he was capable of turning a genre work into something far more elegant, subtle and cool than the usual propaganda-style spy features produced in the Eastern Bloc. Critics have called the Swinging Sixties style convincing, and its dynamic, almost jazzy camera work reminiscent of the best of the Nouvelle Vague.
Georgi Georgiev-Getz stars as Maurice Roland, who is hired by the electronics firm Zodiac, which, as he suspects, is in fact the cover name for a foreign spy organisation. His job is to tell his bosses whatever he can about the Communists. Maurice, however, is in fact the Bulgarian super-spy Emil Boev. He is helped by an attractive assistant, Edith – who is playing a double game.
