The variety TV show genre by the youngest generation of American filmmakers is a bombardment of images on screen, but this goes further. The concept is based on the 1990s MTV show Liquid Television, updated for today. In The Eyeslicer, Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell not only brought lots of filmmakers together, they also created a community – which now has its very own physical hangout in Rotterdam.
The space gives context to the show's concept in a dream-influenced fuzzy memory of the 1990s, reminiscent as much of a 90s rec centre as the basement you used to hang out in with friends after school. In this hangout in Het Nieuwe Instituut, you can watch all of The Eyeslicer episodes on a screen, play nostalgic board games or just... hang out.
A graffiti work by Rotterdam collective Lastplak was created specially for this space and vintage (film-themed) pinball machines can be found here and in the lobby.
