In his low-budget feature debut The Greasy Strangler, British director Jim Hosking (of necessity) played one of the lead roles himself. For the follow-up – like his debut produced by fellow Brit Ben Wheatley – he had a bigger budget to play with. Hence also an all-star cast – by US indie-comedy standards at any rate – featuring Aubrey Plaza, Emile Hirsch, Craig Robinson and Jemaine Clement.
Robinson plays the eponymous character, enigmatic Beverly Luff Linn, who arrives at a hotel in a small American town for the performance that also gives the film its title. But the real hero in the strange world sketched by Hosking is Lulu Danger, played by Plaza.
Her marriage is already on the rocks, so when her husband (Hirsch) is forced to fire her from the ailing franchise restaurant where he is the manager, it doesn’t exactly help. Nor does the arrival of Luff Linn, with whom Lulu shares a mysterious past. Even though Linn is only in town for One Magical Night.
Nominated for the VPRO Big Screen Award.
