A ‘go-fast‘ in French is a drug run done by way of car convoy (the term comes from the fast boats used first during the prohibition era for alcohol smuggling). A go fast has actually little to do with squeaking tires and burning rubber, as the runners obey the speed limits, trying to blend in with the rest of the traffic. Go fasts use a lead car that checks out the road ahead and warns the other cars of potential problems, such as roadblocks. Caution is the name of the game. And yet, from some point in his story on, Frédéric Schoendoerffer does give the term go fast a pleasantly literal interpretation: Le convoi is as much an existentialist paranoia noir Kammerspiel as it is a lean and mean exercise in action at its sleekest, chrome silkiest.
