Claudio Caligari had just completed the lowlife buddy/crime film par excellence Don’t Be Bad when he died of cancer in May 2015. He died as the ‘bad’ filmmaker of unpolished portrayals of rebel youths who emerged from the troubled political violence of the 1970s and refused to embrace the empty consumerist ambitions of the Italy of the 1980s and 1990s. Yet Caligari left a legacy of hope and independence: an unconditional love of film and a stubborn determination to stay different. It is 1995, and childhood friends Cesare and Vittorio spiral down a path of irreversible self-destruction. When Vittorio decides to go straight, Cesare sinks further into drug addiction and petty crime. But Vittorio does not desert Cesare. With sound and fury, Caligari brings them to the verge of desperation, but saves a gleam of hope for the very end.
