The National Human Rights Commission of Korea had the idea of producing omnibus movies on human-rights issues soon after the country’s shift from military to civilian government in 1993. Jang Jin made Someone Grateful for the second omnibus, If You Were Me 2, and succeeded in scandalising large sections of the left with the most brilliant of all his satires. He takes one of the left’s most sacred myths – the sufferings of student activists when they were arrested and tortured under martial law – and rethinks it by focusing on the human rights of the cop who conducts the ‘interrogation’. This rare screening of one of Jang’s best films will be integrated into a sit-down talk show. Jang will discuss his entire career in detail, from the thinking behind his company Film It Suda to his provocative work for TV. admission free
