Second Coming

Jackie is expecting. That is nothing unusual, but after the birth of her son, J.J., Jackie was told she couldn’t have any more children. She hadn’t been to bed with her husband for months and she hadn’t had relations with anyone else. Immaculate Conception? Is Christ returning to Earth through a middle-class Jamaican family in London?
Jackie isn’t the religious type, she hasn’t seen the Angel Gabriel. The situation only gives her stress and she becomes increasingly introverted. Sometimes, she has inexplicable nosebleeds or suffers hallucinations in which a hurricane rages in her bathroom. In the meantime, Mark ‘s (Idris Elba) pride is hurt and the dreamy J.J. can barely tolerate the quarrels between his parents.
In her gripping debut, Debbie Tucker Green sees how a normal family that is basically harmonious implodes in slow motion. Second Coming is detached and smouldering at the same time. In the end, the birth only partly brings deliverance.
