Sara lives in Nakskov, a dull port on the southern Danish island of Lolland. Children cycle in circles in car parks and yokels talk in the bar about their careers in the local sugar factory - hardly a stimulating environment for an intelligent, ambitious girl.
Sara isn’t interested in her classmates either. The only thing that makes her enthusiastic is drama classes at school, especially because they’re given by Karen. Sara falls in love with the young teacher, confesses this to Karen and is rejected. The consequences are dramatic.
Even the most intense events in Limbo are shown in such a cursory way we hardly realise what’s going on. Promising young director Anna Sofie Hartmann has the cool and observing gaze of an anthropologist; the conversations in a bar between Sara and her classmates get as much attention as the chatter of the immigrant kitchen staff. In long shots, tractors with sugar beet drive towards the factory, machines turn, smoke curls up from the chimneys. In Nakskov, life knows little relief. Until it’s over.
