For 18 years, João Bénard da Costa (1935-2009) was director of the Portuguese Film Museum in Lisbon. He was also a writer, poet, critic and actor; for instance in several films by his countryman Manoel de Oliviera.
The poetic biographical documentary made about him by Manuel Mozos, with the subtitle Others Will Love the Things I Loved, shows how he was involved with art from a young age and, as a child, was captivated by the mysterious and erotic power of painting. The autobiographical reflections read aloud by his son come from writings he left after his death. Mozos has the texts accompanied by images of his favourite spots and fragments from his favourite films, such as Lubisch’s The Shop Around the Corner and Nicholas Ray’s cult film Johnny Guitar. Cinema was his last great passion; Mozos shows the fragments from viewing table at the Film Museum that he made great - an apt homage.
