Anyone arriving in Chicago as a prostitute, whether an addict or not, is likely to have a life of (sexual) abuse behind them, as carer Brenda Myers-Powell can tell us; for years, she worked as a prostitute under the name ‘Breezy’. She too knew a lot of suffering as a child. Now, this strong woman patrols the nocturnal streets looking for vulnerable women to support. By day, she tries to convince arrested prostitutes that they are not criminals, but victims - and survivors too. Brenda also finds time to talk to damaged teenagers about their traumas. She helps them break out of the pattern and tries to keep them out of prostitution.
Kim Longinotto tells Brenda Myers-Powell’s story by filming her as she works, but also at home, where she reveals her own painful story. Like with all of her social documentaries, Longinotto chooses a fly-on-the-wall approach to filming her protagonists: this is their story.
