With his feature debut Ape, Joel Potrykus breathed new life into the 1990s slacker film genre. But then with a twist: laziness was linked to pyromania. In the sequel Buzzard, Potrykus goes a step further. His regular alter ego Joshua Burge here plays Marty Jackitansky, an angry young man without any aim or morality, fuelled only by fury and opportunism.
Marty works as a temp at a bank and fills his life with horror metal, snacks and computer games. Between the dialogues with other wage-slaves - the terms ‘dude’, ‘dork’ and ‘man’ are used as punctuation - he rips off a tenner here, 25 there. When his boss is on the point of discovering he has been stealing unsecured cheques, he becomes paranoid and goes into hiding with his nerdy colleague Derek.
Then he flees to Detroit, where he squanders all his money in one night and spends the next roaming the streets, dressed in a Slashdot T-shirt and a Nintendo Power Glove converted into a Freddy Krueger-like claw. A critic called Marty ‘the Travis Bickle of the 21st century’, but don’t expect a catharsis here.
