An unlikely trio meet in an anonymous bar: a businessman in the meat-processing business, a piano tuner and a prostitute. In absurd, intriguing monologues, each of them presents themselves as someone else. They talk about cloning and government conspiracies; there are huge grey areas between truth and fabrication.
All of these truths and untruths resonate loudly throughout the rest of the film. We are plunged into inimitable impressions of country life, with scenes of wild eruptions and unpredictable, bacchanalian excess. 4 is an experience - one which can be seen as a window on contemporary Russia. But at the same time is also much more universal: what is human in a world that is anything but human? In short, an impressive debut, recognised with a Tiger Award in 2005. Khrzhanovsky's next film is in the process of being edited. Dau is a project that already has taken on mythical proportions and has been described as one of the wildest experiments in film history.
