In this debut film by the German director Wolfgang Fischer, 17-year-old Anton goes on holiday with his mother, her new boyfriend and his dog. They move into a modernistic holiday home in the woods by the sea. Soon Anton meets a strange boy and girl, who are staying in the adjacent holiday home. The boy is the opposite of Anton: self assured, aggressive and fearless. Anton is fascinated by this mysterious couple, who keep appearing unexpectedly and disappearing silently, and meanwhile wrestles with the absence of his father and tensions in the relationship between his mother and her boyfriend. Fischer turned Was du nicht siehst into an occasionally horror-like thriller, and uses wide, beautifully lit shots of the woods, the beach and the sea to stress just how deserted the location is, for instance when Anton stands on the cliff towering above the sea.
