The Viennese scandal ensemble Drahdiwaberl was founded in 1969 and, despite several breaking point in its controversial history, it still exists. The founder Stefan Weber read Brecht, Marx and Lenin as a child, as evidenced by the lovely archive shots that form an innocent prelude to the concerts his band were to give for nearly 40 years lashing out at virtually everything. In the last year, the concert violence culminated in the performance Weltrevolution. The road there turned out to be bumpy but eventful and always contrary. Drahdiwaberl stands for theatrical chaos, punk-like music, extreme performances filled with staged tastelessness and stage sex and, for those who like it, anarchic entertainment. The documentary forms an almost chronological report of four decades of Austrian shock entertainment, in which the band became increasingly coarse and politically incorrect in its resistance to the dominant political and religious morality. Band members, but above all Stefan Weber himself, provide a commentary when the archive footage and concert recordings do not say it all. Drahdiwaberl got up everyone’s nostrils, but still has a large audience. Social recognition could not be denied and so Stefan Weber was given the honorary medal of the city of Vienna. Of course he accepted this honour in a typically suitable way.
