Where Is That Home Now? is the first long documentary film by the young film maker Anna Hoffmann. It is a very personal and frank picture of her family - a family of German origin living in Kazakhstan. In the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Hoffmann family decides to emigrate to Germany. The discussion as to whether this was a good decision follows in the years thereafter. In the end Anna decides to persuade her family to return to Kazakhstan and find out. Only her father and uncle have the courage to do this.
The film is a road movie of a journey by train during which the film maker follows the two men on their trip back to the village where they used to live. What begins as a personal story turns into a meditation with philosophical potential when both men start wondering about their roots, about who they actually are and what they feel about Kazakhstan and their new homeland, Germany. Their arrival at the village is moving and shows how Kazakhstan has changed during their absence.
A wonderful journey of discovery with which many people on the move in Europe will be able to identify. (LC)
