What we see on the maximum screen format (Cinemascope) are the different scenes from the slapstick film A Film Johnnie (1914) with Charlie Chaplin, divided over the screen as a regular lattice. The scenes have been looped in their entirety. Thanks to the different lengths, the result is a visually pulsating polyrhythm. The soundtrack was constructed by Bernhard Lang with the aid of a pianola. Mosaik Mécanique lasts just as long as the original material.
