The hunting area is two square kilometres of city. There are no fences around it, people walk in and out. The north side of the area is bordered by the water of the river. There are towers for the judicial and the economic powers. Just behind, the nouveau riches live in terraced apartments. The Afrikaander District, a little further on, was built in the time when workers from Zeeland and Brabant moved en masse to Rotterdam to work in the harbour. Now the apartments are largely occupied by another generation of migrants.
In cooperation with André van der Hout, Carel van Hees mapped out the habits and customs of a special people during 2007. He looked and listened. He observed and ordered. The result is a full-length documentary about life in a contemporary large city. The image extends much further than the limited area where it was recorded. While life refreshes itself and colour and form of the city change all the time, we slowly get to see the underlying constant. The DNA of Rotterdam.
