Bird Saviour, Clouds and Wind is a spiritual fable that takes place somewhere in 19th century Russia. Russian is spoken (although the film is Hungarian) and there are only two protagonists: a peasant boy called Vaska, who walks around with a bird in a wooden cage, and the Bird Saviour (played by the Armenian painter Robert Ovakimjan).
The boy is on his way to another village to meet a girl he is in love with. On his way he comes across a strange man whose most important goals in life seem to be looking for the meaning of life and saving birds. The odd couple decide to carry on together and while they are walking through wonderful landscapes full of blue sky and meadows they exchange peculiar, philosophical dialogues.
This is a film-pilgrimage of a young and curious soul and a holy man. Questions of life and death, as well as of sacrifices are dealt with. The characters, as well as the landscape they are passing through, are symbols for almost forgotten purity and simplicity, unlike our contemporary, hectic world. It is a slow flow of painting-like pictures of vast horizons and lonesome trees and some human souls. A surprising and easy-going journey to unknown lands and worlds. (LC)
