A provincial town in Vendée in the summer. An unfortunate accident mars an ordinary soccer match. A boy is fatally wounded when he becomes trapped under the goal, that was probably not anchored down according to the regulations. The victim’s relatives cannot understand how the accident could happen. Surrounding this event, début director Guérin paints a subtle, meticulously directed and increasingly complex and revealing picture of a community where pain, sorrow and envy lurk just beneath the surface. While the mayor – a role played by Jean-François Stevenin – finds himself embroiled in a scandal as a result of the accident, the victim’s best friend, Sébastien, is especially affected by the drama. He feels obliged to go looking for the many loose ends that Mickaël left following his death. Things that Sébastien did not know about his friend. Or is it unfulfilled sexual desire, or even the desire to take his place and form part of Mickaël’s rich family? Little by little, Sébastien penetrates deeper into the secret of the community and comes closer to the pain of the protagonists in this drama. (SdH)
