Soundtrack
A single shot through the window of a train travelling at speed; the framing includes the skyline and the rails below the train. When travelling by train, the landscape gives the impression of moving past at speeds that diminish with distance. Speed also changes the depth in what we see, from the recognizable space of the distant landscape, to blurred horizontal divisions in the foreground. By using a technique that translates these images into optical sounds, the horizontal divisions become the synchronised soundtrack to the film. The distance of the rail tracks alters the pitch of the sound, and tonality affects the volume. Passing trains and station buildings all have an affect on the sound.
