Hanna lives in an abandoned submarine, and can be seen lovingly taking care of her home. Dennis sits alone in a huge crane, waiting for an order from the dock to start hoisting. Saskia leaves her home beneath the slipway to track down food near the harbour. Dirk is the managing director of a huge transfer company, but is also used to working shifts. The alienating landscape of industry, transfer companies and warehouses north of Amsterdam is a world in which people are surviving and working. Fascinated by codes of conduct and the nightlife within the harbour, director Marjoleine Boonstra paints a portrait of those who live and work there. Their lives seem a world apart, particularly at night when the harbour's geographical distance from Amsterdam is accentuated by the contrast between landscape and cityscape. All these people have their own kingdom, where their personal rules and dreams predominate. One thing they have in common - a predilection for the silence of the night and a shared love for the nocturnal harbour.
