This is a crime drama set in the modern, changing society of Russia in the 1990s. The story deals with the long-standing hostile relationship between two Roma clans, as well as their difficult relationship with the Russian crime lords that they are involved with (Roma baron Alan Chokeshi is played by Dufunya Vishnevsky) The film is heavily populated with the so-called New Gypsies, with their complex extended family relations and treachery often leading to tragic consequences. It combines a number of action-adventure scenes with stately scenes of conspicuously wealthy Roma families inhabiting lavishly furnished mansions and holding large parties for their poorer relatives. The centre of attention is the patriarch's effort to protect his family's well-being, even if it has to be achieved at great cost and with moral compromise.
