This is an unusual and honest portrayal of Polish-Gypsy relations and a marvellous début by Dorota Kedzierzawska. A group of travelling Gypsies settles near a village, somewhere on the outskirts of some Polish mountains, causing a major upheaval amongst the local people. The villagers are firstly curious, later on showing hostility and threatening them. The only person who is free of any prejudices is a teenage girl, Mala, who visits the Gypsy camp regularly and would even like to leave with them. The hatred of the villagers ends up when they attack the Gypsies. In her film, Dorota Kedzierzawska uses a minimum of dialogue and some avant-garde and postmodern cinematic techniques like fragmentation and juxtaposition, while the film has superb art direction and camera work.
