The film, based on a story of T.N. Seetharam, is about the complex relationships between the individuals of the different generations that are supposed to live together according to the tradition of Indian society. An old woman, Rangajji, has a passion and a talent to tell fascinating stories to the children in the village. The youngsters love to listen to the granny, letting their imagination run riot in the process. Rangajji's life takes a drastic turn when her son dies under mysterious circumstances. Her life is not the same anymore. The task of giving shelter to the old storyteller falls on a distant relative who is very reluctant to help her and initially refuses to take her into his house. Fearing disgrace, he finally agrees to give her a place to sleep in a shed where silk worms are kept. The old granny, who practised all her life `madi' - a very specific ritual of purity - is now being pushed into the room with animals. The only person close to her in the whole family is a little boy, Murthy, the youngest in the household. His older brother Subbanna, who went to work in the big city, comes one day to visit his parents. Encountering Rangajji, he sees his opportunity to borrow some money for his planned soap business. Granny lends him ten thousand Rupees, which she kept for her funeral rituals, hoping to get them back with some help in finding her relatives who also live in the big city. One day, the youngest grandson and granny are send to the city during school holidays. What they find there is something that they couldn't even dream of.
