Gold was made as part of an Artist in Residence programme in Los Angeles. The film is made up of psycho-geographical investigations, filmed on location in the South West of the United States: western land. The glitter and neon of Las Vegas, where today's goldseekers try for the jackpot, is distorted by colour manipulations. Deserted mines, coyotes, rocky landscapes and trains are at first sight reminiscent of western films. Gonzalez-Foerster and Leccia investigate these stereotypes with the aid of traditional filmic means, by abstractions and contradictions. The soundtrack, a mixture of zooming environmental sounds and Shostakovitch, was composed by David Shea and Scanner.
