Girlie is the intimate portrait of Ema, a 17yearold girl, of her dreams and her desires. The film can be regarded as a universal portrait of girls of Ema's age; the city where she lives could be exchanged for any other world city.Ema lives in a suburb of a modern city, between the huge concrete apartment buildings, pokey apartments and the secondhand shop where she works. In her quest for happiness, she changes men and tells the truth to anyone she meets. The vicissitudes of Ema, who has a modern and slightly eccentric relationship with her mother, extend over a couple of days. Ema's mother is also looking for happiness and a new man. She mainly does so during the dance lessons she has in a nightclub. Stepbystep, we meet all the other characters especially men who influence the lives of the two women to a greater or lesser extent. The film is not a sketch of an existing reality and nor is it an apocalyptic vision of a disintegrating society. It is rather a reflection on the state of the human soul between the ruins of dysfunctional family and love relationships in our presentday existence. A modern tragicomedy with a hip girl and very good music.
