The monsoon is about to start. The government has decided to close the gates of the newly built dam. The level of water behind the dam has started to rise, creating many islands. Nagi, a young woman married to Ganapa, a local priest, learns that the government will forcibly evict people who have stayed behind rather than accept compensation and move out. Her husband refuses to move from the island. Nagi's fight is just beginning. The director, who won his fourth Golden Lotus for this film: `Having been born and brought up in the hills of Malenadu, the rains were our constant compensation in our childhood. I have been waiting to make a film where the monsoon would be used in all its shades. The rains have often been used in Indian cinema as a backdrop for the songs and dance sequences. I wanted to bring it to the foreground and use it as a character. But the main character, Nagi, is also like water, nothing can discourage her forever and nothing can stop her.'Produced by the actress Soundarya, a big star who also features Nagi, this film is the most mature work of Girish Kasaravalli. His poetic style and images composed in details are mastered to perfection. The local story has been transposed to the universal level and refers to the struggle of two main principles: 'prakriti' (nature/female ) and 'purusha' (male).
