Panel: The Look of Music

A central issue in music video making is the visualisation of music. This triggers a number of questions, such as how the images should relate to the band/singer, or if they should at all. Should the images represent the song's content, or will they develop as a separate entity, complementing and adding layers to the feelings suggested by the music and the meanings the musicians express through their music and performances? Some of the directors involved in the Exploding Cinema programme will team up to discuss their ideas and approaches, and to answer various underlying questions. Ultimately, they will reflect on the new possibilities in visualisation of the music opened by the use of cross media techniques and devices. Panelleden: Floria Sigismondi: The multidisciplinary work of Floria Sigismondi incorporates film, video, photography and sculpture. The aesthetics of early film and painting play an important role in her poetic and macabre work. She has worked with Björk, David Bowie and Marilyn Manson. Michel Gondry: see elsewhere in the catalogue. Geoffrey de Crecy: see elsewhere in the catalogue. W.I.Z.: see elsewhere in the catalogue. Steve Reiss is the moderator of the panel. He wrote the book Thirty Frames Per Second: The Visionary Art of the Music Video, the first book looking at music video as a serious art form.
