The industrialist Evariste Marny is jealous of his competitor, André Vivanti, and commissions the tramp Tony to set fire to Vivanti's business. Vivanti himself is however accused of arson, because people think he wants to claim the insurance. He is sentenced to hard labour. Now Marny's conscience does start to gnaw at him and he takes in the daughter of Vivanti. After thirteen years, Vivanti escapes from jail and returns as a tramp...
