A play on colonial visual symbolism projected on the ceiling of Boijmans. This work was previously projected on the baroque-painted ceiling of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. William Kentridge (1955) is animator, artist and sculptor, theatre director and set designer. Kentridge has used a number of different contexts - the cinema, the art gallery, the theatre - for presentation of his strongly politicised fables and narratives about South Africa. Known and acclaimed as an animator of typically rough-hewn, drawn imagery in films such as Felix in Exile (1994) and Ulisse (1998), he has also presented drawing series for certain of these films together with the films at his gallery shows. His work was featured in the IFFR and at the NAI, Rotterdam in 1999. He has worked extensively in the theatre in South Africa, particularly with the Handspring Puppet Theatre.
