Esperando al Mesias is regarded by many as one of the best Argentine films of the year. Burman is among the youngest generation of Argentine directors who are at present storming the international film world. In his atmospheric second film, based on an excellent script, he succeeds in linking two diagonally juxtaposed lives, providing a modest and eventually hopeful picture of life in Buenos Aires.Several factors combine to make the paths of two lives cross. They are two Argentinians who would never normally have met, because in their enormous city, they both live in different mini universes. However one of them wants a different life, and the other wants his old life back. Ariel is a kid who is proud of his Jewish ancestry, but he is also looking for a new direction in life. His life is more or less mapped out: he shall take over the family restaurant and is expected to marry a nice Jewish girl. However Ariel becomes fascinated by a bisexual video artist. The life of Santamaria is less comfortable. Following a stock exchange crash, he has lost his safe job with a bank and his wife has seized the opportunity to show him the door. Santamaria earns a little money by returning stolen wallets to their owners and courts an attractive older woman who is waiting for her husband to come out of jail.
