Using fragments from the lifes of six very different characters, Cronicamente inviável sketches an ironic and confrontational picture of the chaotic society that is today's Brazil. By making his film look like a documentary at one moment and like fiction the next, Bianchi unravels the expectations of the viewer and plays with the power of the medium: using transparent cinematographic interventions, he shows how easy it is to force a specific conclusion on the spectator, who is all too willing to see his expectations confirmed. The lives of the protagonists are set around the restaurant run by Luis, a distinguished man in his fifties. The intractable Adam, Polish by origin, has just moved to Sao Paulo and finds a job as a waiter in the restaurant. Maria Alice and Carlos, a rich couple and regular customers in Luis' restaurant, each have their own way of communicating with people from the lower classes. Carlos is a cool man who uses social inequality to his own advantage as much as possible, while Maria Alice is much more cautious. The roots of Amanda, the stunningly mysterious manager of the restaurant, remain hidden behind the many stories she tells her chic clientèle. Finally there is Alfredo, an intellectual who travels the country on dubious missions and who expresses his cynical view of the Brazilian myth of happiness as follows: 'Keep them poor, put on some music and that's that.'
