In the year 2000, an international group of artists, architects and film-makers was invited to create short films – all approximately one minute in length – for presentation on 42 large electronic billboards in the city of Seoul, South Korea. They were commissioned for presentation as part of a major event, Media-City Seoul 2000, and the selection was made by an international curator Hans Ulrich Obrist. The principle behind the invitation was to present art in the context of people’s daily lives and no more central location could have been chosen than on the large screens that dominate intersections and other buildings in the cities of Asia – and increasingly so in the West too. All the pieces were silent and the artists worked with the creative potential of the large-scale screen – normally the site of advertising, promos and public campaigns – set against the on-going visual frenzy of city life in a variety of ways. For example, Rem Koolhaas presents images of a traffic jam, Jeff Preiss portraits, Chantal Akerman a section from one of her films and Harun Farocki a joke on the idea of the ‘music video’.
City Vision: Clip City will be presented, alongside other films – during the festival on the large outdoor screen on the Schouwburgplein. A special cinema screening and discussion with the curator will take place on 2 February.
