Conjuror 'professor' Tulan, also dagger-swallow, hypnotist and whatever, crosses the deserts of Western Argentina with his wife Marta in an old truck. Buenos Aires is more than a thousand kilometres away - even the Chilean capital Santiago is closer by. Their marriage has degenerated over the years. Tulan treats his wife like a doormat, while he behaves like a real Don Juan to other women. Marta submits to her sad fate. Then she gets company from the blonde Jennifer, who has just broken up with her boyfriend Tito. A dwarf and the beautiful 15-year-old Martita join them too. With much eye for detail and rhythm, débutant Sampiero sketches what is going on inside the heads of his characters. They all have a personal goal, but at the same time they are part of the group in which radical decisions, misunderstandings and rejections influence their relationships. While in the barren desert world the target is always beyond the horizon, Lost Horizon is not slow or pathetic. The leading role of Tulan is played by the Spanish Eusebio Poncela, who was protagonist three years ago in Martin H. by Adolfo Aristarain. He is convincing as a disillusioned opportunist, a man of the most dangerous sort for his surroundings. He appears truly sorry about the suicide of his wife, but the reason why only gets through to him when it is all that is left for him.
