Rien à faire

Pierre (40) has been sitting at home for a month. He has been sacked by Grossard, the multinational where he spent seven intensive years of faithful service in the upper management. Marie is 35 and has already been home unemployed for 14 months. She worked for a pittance in the storerooms of the same Grossard. Pierre and Marie each have a happy marriage and wouldn't dream of having an affair. Then they meet in the supermarket. Pierre, who is a little vulnerable after weeks of inactivity, wants to know how on earth she fills her time. Marie answers clumsily, vexed yet honest. They meet the next day to go shopping and again the day after. They enjoy the time they spend together while others work. And before they know it, something like love emerges. A secret, shameless, loose, restless, unpredictable love for their days of unemployment. Until Pierre finds a job... The third feature by the talented Marion Vernoux is a subtle, restrained masterpiece. It is shot at existing locations in large supermarkets and on barren new estates, and that augments the alienating mood of the film while also stressing the impossibility of the relationship. The roles are acted by Patrick Dell'Isola and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, a brilliant actress who has put together an amazing oeuvre in a relatively short time span.
