Moving Stills

Moving and confrontational video installation made up of three short film loops: Four Storeys, Petit Jésus and Karaoke (see also Shorts). Donigan Cumming: ‘I want to allow the viewers to undergo the complexity of a different life, to let them feel that experience. That feeling can vary from curiosity to condemnation, from support to apathy. Two things happen at the same time: an intensification of the feeling of the person telling the story and an amplification of the consciousness of the viewer about their reaction. Sometimes this can lead to an urge to leave, to escape. The camera with its staring gaze could be characterised as “the cruel machine”, but looking away also has much to do with cruelty and blaming oneself. To find a way to express this dichotomy, that is the focal point of Moving Stills.‘

Liam Gillick

Two wall-sized slide projections and a series of soundtracks. Together they form a ‘location’ for a possible film by Liam Gillick and Thomas Mulcaire. The film is directed by Phillipe Parreno (a well-known French artist) and produced by Anna Sanders Films, Paris. The slides were taken in Thamesmead in South London. This utopian district was built in the late sixties and formed the set for Kubricks A Clockwork Orange, a film that can still not officially be screened in the UK because it would cause violence and social unrest.
