The film is made up of a varied collage based on one long registering digital video recording of a modern music and dance show. The performance took place in the Aichi Arts Center in Japan, in different spaces inside and outside the building. It is an intriguing and complex performance that came about in co-operation with several artists. In fact Oki himself formed part of the co-operation because recording the actions is also part of the show. Oki mingled with the dancers and moved with them through the various parts of the building. Alongside pictures of the dance, Oki adds impressions of Okinawa, Kochi and Nagoya to his collage. The three places and the recording of the show explain the title: 3 + 1. The show, Hill of Ships, Stage of Water, is about rivers; the choreography was by Yonei Sumie. The impressions are filmed using a variety of material including 16mm, 8mm and several video formats. The projected images within the theatre show are also by Oki. By combining various layers of images and Oki’s participatory observation, this film is very different from the usual recordings of theatre shows. The expressiveness of the images in the show also differs greatly from Oki’s other, more introspective work, but in the collage shots, Oki’s hand is easily recognised.
