Technophilia and technophobia are emotional complaints. The blind love of technology is, just like the unconditional hatred of it, built on grand claims such as: 'Space is dead'. Technophiles celebrate this demise, technophobes regret it and blame the collapse of the public space on the mass media. But can that space, apparently lost to the media, be defined outside the context of those media? Who is this 'audience' in whose name a digital war is being fought? The lecture by Diller + Scofidio targets the idea of 'live' events, as became clear during the Gulf War. A distinction can come about between live events and recorded images. Diller + Scofidio present work that operates in this apparently everyday live environment, that undermines the distinction between live and recorded, processed experiences. Diller + Scofidio is an interdisciplinary studio that works on the intersection between art, architecture and the performing arts. (See also Indigestion)
