A former CIA photographer returns to the Mekong Valley in Laos. His commission is to photograph the kingdom in the mountains as part of a tourism development project. After his arrival, he finds one of his old friends. Together they head out to investigate the Mekong, take part in processions, festivals and jungle trips. The American hero becomes more and more involved with his friend and his family; it is a new kind of adventure for him in which he is seduced by the natural charm of the typical mountain people. The dialogues in the film, with their philosophical overtones, are loosely based on Tagore, the well-known Bengal poet. The viewer sees in this colourful and moving docu-drama much of the land and the life of its people.
